The Michigan ProStart® Program

ProStart is a nationwide, two-year high school program that unites the classroom and the industry. It develops the best and brightest talent into tomorrow’s restaurant and foodservice industry leaders. In Michigan, 68 high schools and career centers use the ProStart curriculum with more than 5,000 students participating.  Students learn vital kitchen skills, including food safety and knife cuts, and important management lessons, such as menu development and marketing. The state competition provides a hands-on opportunity for students to demonstrate the skills learned throughout the year and be judged by top industry professionals.

The Curriculum

ProStart utilizes "The Foundations of Restaurant Management & Culinary Arts" curriculum and ServSafe guidelines, helping educators implement an effective learning experience in today’s classroom environment. A blended coverage of culinary arts and management topics are designed to develop well-rounded skills that translate to the workplace. ProStart is the career and technical education culinary program of choice of the Michigan Department of Education and exceeds all state standards.

The Mentors

Mentors play a key role in the ProStart Program. They help students make a connection between their education and their future career.  Mentors serve as an experience advisor, providing guidance for career goals, helping develop character and work ethic, and giving hands-on training. In return, mentors gain satisfaction in helping shape the next generation of foodservice professionals.
