| Valentine's Day Dining Fact Sheet |
According to the National Restaurant Association, Valentine's Day is the third most popular occasion or holiday to dine out. Almost one-third of Americans (32 percent) dine out on Valentine's Day. The most popular occasion for dining out is birthdays; Mother's Day ranks second.
"Although restaurants are part of Americans' lifestyles throughout the year, dining out on special occasions is still considered a treat," said National Restaurant Association President and Chief Executive Officer Steven C. Anderson. "Restaurants offer more than just a delicious meal—they serve as a social oasis and provide diners more time to spend with family and loved ones, particularly on such a special holiday as Valentine's Day when we celebrate special relationships."
One out of three Americans dine out on February 14. Younger Americans (ages 18-34) are most likely to dine out on Valentine's Day (44 percent). Dining out on this holiday is also more common among those who have a college education (37 percent).
Individuals living in the South (38 percent) and those living in a metropolitan area (34 percent) were also more likely to dine out on Valentine's Day.
