This September 20 members of the Michigan Restaurant Association descended on Washington, D.C. to join hundreds of other restaurateurs and affiliated businesses from across the country at the 2003 National Restaurant Association Public Affairs Conference.
The purpose: to combine the voices of hundreds of individual restaurant operators into one massive voice, calling on our elected officials to pay attention to this nation's foodservice operators and business owners. Attendees participated in meetings with members of Congress from Michigan to discuss solving the problems facing the foodservice industry: frivolous obesity lawsuits, out-of-control class action lawsuits, high taxes, double taxation, burdensome paperwork and regulatory requirements, and the skyrocketing costs of providing health care.
But that was not all. MRA members got an opportunity to establish closer relationships not only with legislators but also with each other. Dinners at some of Washington's hottest restaurants allowed members to mingle with their fellow attendees, and enjoy one-on-one conversation with members of Congress in a social setting.
In addition, many of the conference attendees enjoyed a private visit in the White House's West Wing, looking upon the Cabinet Room and the Oval Office. Members were even able to witness the landing of the presidential helicopter on the lawn during the visit, and see President George W. Bush emerge just a short distance away.
In the end, this year's conference was a smash hit. Attendees made great strides in advancing the restaurant association agenda and had a good time as well. We look forward to another exciting public affairs conference next year and are hopeful even more MRA members will sign up for this amazing trip. Stay tuned!
