On March 31, about 100 MRA members visited the State Capitol in Lansing for the association’s fifth-annual MRA Capitol Day. This year’s event saw all-time highs in both attendance and registrations, and showed legislators that the restaurant industry means business when it comes to government affairs.
The day began with opening comments from MRA President Jeff Tuma, owner of The Embers in Mt. Pleasant. President Tuma stressed the importance of getting involved in the legislative arena, emphasizing that it’s crucial for restaurateurs not only to communicate with their elected officials but also to get to know them personally. He also stressed the need for restaurateurs to be in the know on issues affecting our industry. As one of the largest private employers in the state, it’s important for the MRA to be out in front on the issues, and make sure state legislators hear and understand our concerns.
MRA Board Member Patti Ann Moskwa, who owns Horn’s Gaslight Bar and The Yankee Rebel Tavern on Mackinac Island, discussed the opportunities available to MRA members to participate legislatively and politically. Patti Ann also stated that another crucial part of politics is donating to the MRA Political Action Committee (MRA PAC). In addition to our impressive grassroots strength, it’s also important for legislators to see that our members recognize the importance of financially supporting candidates who align with our industry’s point of view. The morning program of Capitol Day commenced with MRA Public Affairs staff giving attendees a briefing about important issues being addressed at the State Capitol. Topics addressed included: tip credit reduction, obesity lawsuits, a government-mandated smoking ban and youth employment reforms.
Members also received an election year update from veteran political pollster Steve Mitchell, chairman of Mitchell Research and Communications. Both industry veterans and newcomers to the political process came away impressed with this year’s MRA Capitol Day and the positive impact that a united lobbying campaign can have on state government.
Following a steady stream of personal visits with state representatives senators and their key staff, Capitol Day participants and legislators came together for an evening reception in downtown Lansing. After sampling some delectable treats from seven of the finest area restaurants, one state representative declared that the MRA Capitol Day reception was “the Cadillac of receptions.”
