MRA Capitol Day 2010 a Tremendous Success
More than 120 Michigan restaurateurs registered and descended on the Michigan Restaurant Association headquarters in Lansing for MRA Capitol Day 2010, making this year’s eleventh annual event one of the largest ever. The purpose of Capitol Day is to bring the leaders of the restaurant industry to the state capital to voice the concerns of food and beverage service operators to lawmakers and other officials.
Chairman of the MRA Board of Directors Matt Durack of Continental Cregar, LLC in Lake Orion got things started with an introduction to attendees, who had come from all over Michigan to be a part of this important annual event. Participants then began a conversation on a number of issues that are currently in play in Lansing which directly impact this industry, including the state budget, a proposal to eliminate the sales tax exemption for offering free employee meals, a proposal to reduce the sales tax collection allowance, youth employment reform, and a proposal to allow cities, villages, townships and counties to assess local alcoholic drink taxes.
Then attendees fanned out to meet with lawmakers. While the MRA has a staff of lobbyists that work the Capitol, often the most effective lobbying is done by the members themselves, and this year’s event was no exception. Attendees spoke to lawmakers and their staff about the issues and what they mean to them. Early feedback received after the event indicated that these messages were delivered clearly and successfully, and they’re already having an impact.
The day ended with a grand reception at MRA headquarters complete with food from member restaurants and Michigan-made beers. MRA president and chief executive officer Rob Gifford called this year’s Capitol Day a tremendous success. “The challenges each of our restaurateurs face, and the demands on their time, have never been greater,” he said. “Yet these people came to Capitol Day because they know the importance of legislative issues to their businesses, and understand what kind of impact their participation at the Capitol can make.”
With the influence of the MRA in Lansing growing along with the interest of restaurant operators in legislative and political issues, MRA Capitol Day will continue to be a fun and worthwhile event for all Michigan restaurant operators.
