YOUTH MINIMUM WAGE BILL SIGNED INTO LAW
New law will allow sub-minimum wage for 16- and 17-year-olds
On Friday, September 22, the governor signed into law legislation introduced by state Sen. Cameron Brown (R-Sturgis) which creates a state youth minimum wage for the first time in state history. MRA supported the legislation and thanks Sen. Brown, state Senate Majority Leader Ken Sikkema (R-Wyoming) and state House Speaker Craig DeRoche (R-Novi) for their efforts in getting this passed into law.
Effective October 1, Michigan employers will be allowed to pay 16- and 17-year-olds a wage as low as 85 percent of the state minimum wage [Public Act 375 of 2006, MCL 408.384b(2)]. Therefore, with the three minimum wage increases scheduled starting October 1, the youth minimum wage will look like this:

The youth training wage of $4.25 for employees under the age of 20 for their first 90 days of employment remains in effect. MRA members can contact the MRA Public Affairs Department at (800) 968-9668 with questions.
