MRA Alert: Michigan House of Representatives once again passes an exemption-filled ban on smoking
As you know, recently the state Senate passed a ban on smoking in all workplaces in Michigan (except tribal businesses and home-based businesses). Yesterday, the state House of Representatives, instead of passing the Senate bill, voted to approve and send to the state Senate a bill which would ban smoking except for in:
- tribal businesses
- home-based businesses
- cigar bars
- tobacco shops
- bingo halls
- casino gambling spaces
- race tracks
- workplaces where the right for employees to smoke has been collectively-bargained and affirmed in a contract
The state Senate must now determine whether to take up the House-passed version of the legislation. Significantly, the state House still has the bill passed a few weeks ago by the state Senate as well.
The MRA continues to oppose a smoking ban, and has also argued that if a smoking ban is passed it should be applied as broadly as possible so as to provide a level playing field. We will continue to closely follow this issue.
