MRA Hosts Conference on Leadership in the Hospitality Industry
LANSING – More than 60 college and university students and hospitality professionals gathered in Lansing recently for an innovative leadership conference hosted by the Michigan Restaurant Association Educational Support Foundation (ESF) joined hospitality industry professionals with elite hospitality students to learn, be inspired, and explore new ideas.
The conference, “Leadership Skills for the Hospitality Industry,” was held on Monday, March 30, at the headquarters building of the Michigan Restaurant Association (MRA) in downtown Lansing. The idea behind the conference was to bring college students, hospitality professionals ,and industry leaders together to help students bridge the gap between earning their degree and the work world which awaits them.
Funded by a generous grant from American Express, the conference brought together 35 college students and 30 hospitality professionals to be motivated by industry leaders. With speakers who stimulated discussion and an exchange of ideas, attendees explored new approaches to inspire work teams and address the changing needs of the hospitality industry. Topics discussed included blending generations in the workplace, empowering your workforce, and the impact of a positive attitude on your work and life.
Speakers at the conference included Ari Weinzweig, co-owner and founder of Zingerman’s in Ann Arbor, Joann Jackson, vice president of market diversity effectiveness at Marriott International, and Harvey McLand, division trainer for U.S. Foodservice.
The professionals attending came from all facets of the hospitality industry. From restaurateurs, suppliers, and hoteliers, all segments were represented. Students participating represented 11 hospitality schools.
