MI Restaurant Assn. announces new alcohol server training program

Liquor control commission unanimously supports new program

LANSING, MI – The Michigan Restaurant Association (MRA) announced today that the ServSafe Alcohol™ Responsible Alcohol Service program, a brand new program for training employees and managers of liquor licensed establishments, is now available.

The ServSafe Alcohol™ Responsible Alcohol Service program outlines effective alcohol service practices for all front-of-the-house staff of restaurants and bars, including bartenders, waiters, hosts, busers, security and valets.  Taking a holistic approach, the program advocates team-based prevention of difficult intoxication situations.

Under Michigan law, liquor licenses establishments are required to have their management personnel trained under an MLCC-approved program.  Approved programs must address, among other things, identifying the signs and stages of intoxication, the nature and monitoring of intoxication, and spotting invalid and fraudulent identification.  The ServSafe Alcohol™ Responsible Alcohol Service program was approved unanimously by the Michigan Liquor Control Commission (MLCC) as an acceptable training program that addresses these and other alcohol consumption issues.

ServSafe Alcohol™ Responsible Alcohol Service is open to members and non-members of the MRA.  Members in good standing with the association are eligibile to receive a discount.  For information on ServSafe Alcohol™ Responsible Alcohol Service, contact Stacy Gonda, MRA Director, Education at (800) 968-9668.  For information on becoming a member of the MRA, contact Michelle Batora, MRA Director, Membership Development at (800) 968-9668.

Founded in 1921, the Michigan Restaurant Association represents more than 4,500 Michigan foodservice establishments.  The foodservice industry plays an integral role in Michigan’s economy, employing more than 436,000 people and creating more than $11.3 billion in total annual sales.
