National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation Awards Scholarships to Three Michigan High School Students
LANSING, MI – The Michigan Restaurant Association announced today that three students from Michigan were awarded $2,000 National ProStart® Certificate of Achievement Scholarships by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF). The NRAEF offered scholarships to students who plan to further their education in the restaurant and foodservice industry.
The three students are Danielle Halbert and Jennifer Mitchell from the Calhoun Area Technology Center in Battle Creek, and Hope Lemire from the Mason-Lake Intermediate School District in Scotville.
“We are proud to help support Danielle, Jennifer and Hope as they continue their education after high school,” said Mary M. Adolf, president and chief operating officer of the NRAEF. “These three students have given themselves a solid foundation in the foodservice industry by participating in the ProStart® program and are poised to continue their growth and development as future leaders of our industry.”
The NRAEF’s ProStart® program is offered in over 1,100 schools in 45 states and territories, including Michigan, and integrates academic learning with mentored internships to teach high school students basic business management skills used in the restaurant and foodservice industry. When students meet the program’s academic standards and complete a checklist of competencies, they are awarded the National ProStart® Certificate of Achievement, which signifies that they are well qualified to enter the industry workforce. This year, $275,000 of NRAEF scholarships have been awarded to over 150 ProStart® students—helping make their dreams of a career in the restaurant and foodservice industry one step closer to reality.
“We are pleased to see so many of our students look for rewarding jobs in the restaurant and foodservice industry – the cornerstone for career-and-employment opportunities – as they continue their education,” said Rob Gifford, executive director of the Michigan Restaurant Association. “Research shows that from 2004 to 2014, the number of jobs in the restaurant industry is projected to increase by 1.8 million. We are proud to provide these students with the opportunity to become valuable assets within this tremendous industry.”
In addition to the National ProStart® Certificate of Achievement scholarship, the NRAEF also awards $2,000 scholarships to high school seniors and undergraduate students enrolled in a two- or four-year accredited restaurant and foodservice program, and $1,500 scholarships to teachers looking to expand their knowledge of the restaurant and foodservice industry.
