Training for safe food and alcohol service coming to Traverse City
Nationally-renowned training courses to be available for area restaurant, tavern operators
LANSING – With the growing number of restaurants and taverns in the area, and with peak tourism season approaching, the Michigan Restaurant Association (MRA) has announced that two nationally-recognized safe food and alcohol service training courses will be taught in Traverse City later this month. The two training courses, ServSafe® Food Safety and ServSafe® AlcoholTM, will be taught on May 30 and 31, respectively, at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City.
“ServSafe® Food Safety and ServSafe® Alcohol™ are the industry standards for food safety and responsible alcohol service education,” said Stacy Gonda, MRA director of education. “With so many food and beverage establishments getting prepared for their busy seasons, these classes on May 30 and 31 offer a perfect opportunity for restaurateurs to get up to date on the latest training.”
Approved by the Michigan Department of Agriculture, ServSafe® Food Safety certification meets all statutory requirements, including local health department mandates. ServSafe® Food Safety training helps protect against foodborne illness outbreaks, minimize insurance costs, reduce liability risks, and improve food quality. The course empowers restaurateurs and employees with knowledge about potentially hazardous foods, sanitary food handling practices, personal hygiene, time-temperature controls, and facility design.
The ServSafe® Alcohol™ responsible alcohol service program gives restaurant managers and employees the knowledge, confidence and tools to think, act and react responsibly when serving beverage alcohol. Approved by the Michigan Liquor Control Commission, this training and certification program is offered through the Michigan Restaurant Association in compliance with the Michigan Liquor Control Code. The course empowers restaurateurs and employees with knowledge about checking identification, recognizing and preventing intoxication, alcohol laws and handling difficult guests and situations.
Both classes will be conducted by Nancy Laber, a Michigan registered sanitarian who has vast experience in the field working in local health departments.
ServSafe® Food Safety, an eight-hour class with exam, will be conducted on Tuesday, May 30 from 8:00am to 5:30pm. The cost of the training course is $115 for MRA members, $175 for non-members.
ServSafe® Alcohol™, a four-hour class with exam, will be conducted on Wednesday, May 31 from 8:00am to 12:00 noon. The cost of the training course is $35 for MRA members, $65 for non-members.
Both classes will be held at Northwestern Michigan College–University Center, at 2200 Dendrinos Drive in Traverse City.
