Chef un-retires to cook up a storm in Clarkston

Source: Detroit News
"I was bored out of my mind in Florida," says Dante Vannelli, who came out of three years of retirement in the Sunshine State a few months ago to return to Michigan to take over as chef at the attractive Clarkston restaurant, La Villa Italiano Ristorante. And he loves it.

Chef Vannelli, who for years was the proprietor of Vannelli Gus' Steak House in Lake Orion, now presides over a menu that includes some of the items people remember and ask for from Gus', including the house potatoes, boiled, sliced and pan-fried with bacon and green onion, sweet-and-sour French dressing and garlicky escargots, in addition to a long list of veals and pastas from his Tuscan heritage.

Food has always been the family business. Vannelli's son, Anthony, is chef at Metamore Hunt Club, while his son-in-law, Anthony Sexton, presides over the kitchen at Pike Street Restaurant in Pontiac.
