New-York-style deli planned

Source: Ann Arbor News
It has to be a first for Ann Arbor: A native Ethiopian opening a New York-style delicatessen; the kind you might still find on the lower east side.

Seifu Lessanewerk has negotiated a lease for the former Manali Cafe at the corner of East Washington Street and South Fifth Avenue. He plans to create a pass-through between the deli and his Blue Nile restaurant, uniting the two kitchens.

A former New Yorker himself, Lessanewerk managed food and beverages for several high-profile restaurants, including Windows on the World. He came to Michigan to do the same for the Muer restaurants - and rear his children in a cheaper place than New York City.

If all goes well, Lessanewerk will open his to-be-named restaurant in about three months.
