New owner takes over Arnies; Diner gets new name and plans

Arnies, an upscale restaurant that has gained a foothold downtown in just six months since opening, has a new name, a new owner and new plans.

Daryl's Downtown is the new name of the popular restaurant at 151 W. Michigan, and Daryl Hoskins officially assumes ownership of the business today.

The signs on the restaurant's awning and windows were changed last week.

Previous owner Arnold Schneider still owns the building.

"When Arnie called about this opportunity, I came into the building and first noticed how beautiful the interior was," Hoskins said. "I was very impressed with the look and immediately felt that this was the place for me.

"Our goal is to deliver the best food and service of any restaurant in the area and we want to be here for the entire community. We want this to become the place to be."

Hoskins, 41, of Canton is known to area diners from his 10 years as part-owner and kitchen manager/general manager of the Common Grill in Chelsea.

Business has been good and Hoskins is happy with the support he's received from the community. But like other downtown business owners, he would like to see more retail activity.

"A vital downtown is important for my success and I'd love to see area shops open later and on weekends. We will work hand-in-hand with other downtown businesses to create that vitality and bring everyone to downtown and the restaurant," he said.

He plans to alter the menu a little here and there, adding more chicken dishes, steamed mussels, barbecued ribs and health conscientious entrees on the lunch and dinner menus.

The restaurants hours will change, too, and it won't be open Mondays.

After Mother's Day, Daryl's Downtown will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday,from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday andfrom 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. A Sunday brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. will also be offered.

Perk Avenue, the restaurant's coffee shop, is open weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. There, patrons can order cold sandwiches and other items from the full menu. The restaurant will also make deliveries for orders for six or more to downtown offices.

First- and second-floor banquet facilities are also available with seating for up to 60. In October, Hoskins plans to open a third-floor club called the "Deuce," which will feature live entertainment on weekends. Plans are also in place to offer patio dining and outdoor entertainment.
