The Harbor Springs Planning Commission will review the first proposals submitted under its recently approved zoning code change developed to encourage specialty restaurants in the downtown area.
While both proposals will be reviewed using the new code language, one is for a full-service restaurant and the other will fall under the “specialty restaurant” classification.
The full-service restaurant is being proposed by Marty and Kathy Breighner and Rebecca and Larry Cameron of Harbor Springs. They are looking to convert a former carry-out restaurant, Harbor Springs Gourmet on State Street, into a full-line restaurant to be known as State Street Fish & Chips.
The propsal calls for some 35 seats and the owners pjlan to offer both lunch and dinner. There is no plan to offer alcohol.
The second proposal has been put forth by Jason and Melinda Bryce of Harbor Springs. They currently operate a coffee cart licensed by the city at the city marina. The Bryce’s propose to convert the former Tom’s Mom’s Cookies building, set off of Main Street, into a specialty restaurant to be known at Milky Way on Main.
The proposal fits uner the city’s new specialty restaurant classification and will have at least eight seats inside. The owners are also asking for permission to have some outdoor seating.
These are the first two restaurant proposals to come before the Planning Commission since is approved a change in the city zoning code. The new code demands significantly less parking for the smaller restaurants.
The new code language also specifically outlaws franchise and fast-food type of establishments.
