Michigan Restaurant Association Urges Macomb County Health Department to Reverse Ruling

Thousands of restaurants losing millions & closing doors

The Michigan Restaurant Association again today called upon the Macomb County Health Department to reverse its decision to close all restaurants while a boiling water advisory remains in effect following the recent power outage.

The MRA, which represents 4,000 restaurants in the state, has also been in communication with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and confirmed that Macomb County Health department officials have the authority to allow restaurants to operate during a boiling water advisory, as long as proper safe food handling procedures are followed.

"Our restaurant owners and operators are losing thousands of dollars in business because of this ruling, and many are in jeopardy of losing their livelihood and closing their doors for good, unless the Macomb County Health Department ruling is reversed," said MRA Executive Director Rob Gifford. "It makes no sense that Wayne and Oakland counties who draw water from the same supply have allowed their restaurants to remain open - unlike the Macomb Health Department ruling which is destroying these restaurant owners' livelihood."  

The MRA continues to reach out to state and county officials to help reopen the doors of thousands of Macomb county restaurants and businesses in spite of a decision by the Macomb County Health Department to keep them closed.  Wayne and Oakland counties, unlike Macomb, have also been under a boiling water advisory but have allowed their restaurants to remain open.
