Highlights of 2003 MRA Capitol Day

Nearly 100 members of the Michigan Restaurant Association, including restaurant owners from around the state, on April 2 convened on the State Capitol for the MRA's 4th Annual Capitol Day.

The day kicked off with a morning welcome by MRA President Craig Heath, owner of the Brighton Bar & Grill and Red Cedar Grill in Williamston.  Following the president's remarks, MRA Legislative Director Bill Zaagman gave an overview with attendees on the most important issues currently facing restaurant owners in Michigan.  MRA members discussed pros and cons on a variety of issues, including legislation currently in the works to lower the legal blood alcohol levels, proposed restaurant smoking bans, employee minimum wage, and labor limits for youth employment.

Members also received a legislative update on the latest happenings and political rumblings in Lansing from Political Analyst Bill Ballenger, editor of Inside Michigan Politics.  Both industry veterans and newcomers to the political process came away impressed with Capitol Day and the positive impact that a united lobbying campaign can have.  

This year's Capitol Day was a great success,' Heath said. The outpouring of support from so many of our members, demonstrates how strongly the MRA is committed to making its voice heard at the state level.  Those who attended took a day away from their restaurants and businesses because they understood the importance of meeting with their state lawmakers to discuss their concerns and the challenges currently facing the restaurant industry.

As the largest employment industry in the state, its important for the MRA to be out in front on the issue and make sure state legislators have a real grasp on our issues.

Following a steady stream of personal visits to the offices of state representatives and senators, Capitol Day participants and legislators came together for a reception at MRA headquarters, hosted by Beggar's Banquet of East Lansing.
