National Restaurant Overview of the Industry
The restaurant industry has firmly established itself as an integral part of the American lifestyle ? more than 45 percent of today's food dollar is spent away from home, and almost half of all adults are restaurant patrons on a typical day. The restaurant industry has stepped up its services to meet consumers' growing desire for convenience, value and an entertaining environment away from home, building a solid foundation for continued growth. The role of the restaurant industry in the lifestyle of American consumers is reflected in these statistics, based on recent National Restaurant Association (NRA) research: - Almost half of all adults (48 percent) agree that restaurants are an important part of their lifestyle.
- Almost two out of five adults (39 percent) agree that using restaurants allows them to be more productive.
- More than half of all adults (53 percent) agree that they are busy, so convenience is critical.
- Almost nine of out 10 consumers (88 percent) agree that eating at restaurants is usually fun.
- More than two out of five households with a cell phone (41 percent) have used it to place an order at a restaurant for takeout or delivery.
- Almost 10 percent of consumers have already used the Internet to view a restaurant's menu, and among adults who have not done so, an additional 44 percent would like to be able to access a restaurant's menu on-line.
According to NRA projections, the restaurant industry should be the leading purveyor of food in the nation within the next decade. By the year 2010, restaurant industry sales are projected to reach $577 billion and account for more than 53 percent of the consumer's food dollar. In addition, there should be more than 1 million restaurant locations.
