MRA Promoting New Legislation

Fresh from a successful 1999-2000 legislative session, the MRA has hit the ground running by promoting legislation to benefit and assist restaurant operators. here are three new issues we are pursuing after receiving feedback from MRA members:

Online Ordering of Spirits
Legislation is being drafted to require the Liquor Control Commission to establish an integrated online system for ordering spirits from ADAs. The language specifies that the system should allow licensees to go to one web site location to order all brands and types of spirits. The MRA recently met with Dan Gustafson, Chair of the Commission, to discuss this legislation.

To discuss these bills, other bills, or make suggestions on potential legislation, contact Bill Zaagman of the MRA at (800) 968-9668, or e-mail wzaagman@acd.net

Elimination of the Sampling Prohibition
SB 256, introduced by Sen. Shirley Johnson (R-Royal Oak), amends the Liquor Control Code to permit on-premise licensees to allow their employees to sample alcoholic beverages for educational purposes. The bill was passed by the Senate in April and is expected to be taken up in the House soon.

Changes to the Youth Employment Act
Legislation is being drafted to amend the Youth Employment Standards Act in two ways. First, the bill would permit minors aged 16 and 17 to work up to a flat 20 hours per week during times when school is in session instead of the current 48 hour school and work combination. Second, the hours for employment of minors aged 16 and 17 would be changed to reflect the hours they are permitted to work under an hours deviation, thus eliminating the deviation process.

Legislation is being drafted to require the Liquor Control Commission to establish an integrated, online system for ordering spirits.
