Every employer should promote a safe work environment. However, accidents do happen so you must be prepared to deal with an injured employee. Some basic guidelines to follow include:
- Promptly furnish medical treatment for any work-related injury, whether it needs on-site first aid or urgent treatment by a professional or at a hospital.
- Report the injury without delay to your insurance carrier or claims adjuster, regardless of the severity of the injury.
- File a Report of Injury (Form 100) with the Bureau of Workers' and Unemployment Compensation if the injury results in the employee being off work for more than seven days.
- Stay in touch with your injured employee. This lets the employee know you care and that you are not the enemy.
- Try to accommodate a back-to-work strategy. The quicker an employee returns to work the cheaper the claim is likely to be.
- Learn from the injury. Why did it occur? Can you prevent it from happening again?
