Mentors - How a Worksite Works Mentors are needed to assist in preparing students for a career in the restaurant and foodservice industry. Worksite experience enables young people to gain the practical experience needed to pursue hospitality careers. The worksite is a crucial component of any Hospitality Business Alliance (HBA) school-to-career initiative. The HBA can help operations by providing crucial education and networking support. What are my responsibilities as an operator? - Observe all state/local labor regulations
- Meet state/local sanitation and OSHA safety standards
- Designate an experienced employee to mentor no more than three interns
- Agree to 10-12 hours minimum per week for the intern at starting wage
- Provide a day of teacher awareness training at a worksite
- Sign a school-to-career letter of agreement which outlines the roles and responsibilities of all parties participating in the program
How do my employees serve as mentors? - Attend mentor training offered by the MRA program
- Mentor no more than three interns
- Spend at least a half hour per week giving feedback and monitoring the intern's progress with the competencies checklist
- Schedule the intern for a minimum of 10-12 hours per week
- Make sure the intern rotates through competencies
- Work with a school coordinator to monitor progress of intern
What sort of student intern will I work with? - Enrolled in a certified School-to-Career Hospitality Program such as ProStart (restaurant/foodservice) or Lodging Management Program (hotels and motels)
- Has parents' permission to work; has own means of transport to and from work
- Dresses appropriately, is consistently on time and follows worksite rules
- Undergoes screening and interviewing as part of the worksite selection process
